Leveling Your Pet and Gaining Pet Loyalty

There are many questions surrounding how to easily level your pet and increase it’s loyalty. So much so that there are several guides out there just for this purpose. Well to help simplify this, we thought it best to try and set the record straight. Using Mania’s (Mania’s Arcania and Petopia fame) research on Loyalty Gain: Time and Experience and her follow-up article Patch 2.4: Level 70 XP Increase.

Both of these articles highlight the a couple of key points.

1. Pet Leveling and Loyalty both are partially based on a percentage of the Hunter’s XP (roughly 5%).

2. Pet Loyalty is based on Time spent with the hunter as well.

3. Based on the comments and feedback. Consistent Pet Happiness also seems to affect Pet Loyalty and Leveling.

Using these three items. We can see some interesting trends.

First, with the release of patch 2.4 there was a significant increase in the total XP one has when they max out level 70. Currently, at level 70 every hunter has a max XP of 1,256,500.

How does this impact you?? Well let’s see the table by Mania

Time Required

To Get From … To… XP Gained Required* Time Required
Level 1 (Rebellious) –> Level 2 (Unruly) 5 5% of hunter’s level(62,825 xp) 0 minutes*
Level 2 (Unruly) –> Level 3 (Submissive)

5% of hunter’s level (62,825 xp)

30 minutes
Level 3 (Submissive) –> Level 4 (Dependable) 5% of hunter’s level (62,825 xp) 45 minutes
Level 5 (Faithful) –> Level 6 (Best Friend) 5% of hunter’s level (62,825 xp) 90 minutes

Now the miss conception of this is that you can jump up loyalty just based on the Time Required column. Then many people start to complain. What you need to remember is that for each level you still have the 5% of Hunter’s Level requirement. This can add significant time between gaining happiness. That’s a requirement of 62,825 xp needed to be gained with each Loyalty level.

So the Time Required, should really be interpreted “Time Out With Hunter” questing and killing mobs. But for the XP gains, you need to have the pet kill stuff that is at least “Green” or offers XP to the Hunter, and netting a total of about 251,300 XP in order to become your pet’s best friend. :)

Now your probably asking yourself, “How am I going to do that???” and “Does it really make sense???” Well as for How? We’ll cover that next time.

But, as for “Does it really make sense???” of course it does. How many times have you wished for that Wind Serpent, Ravager to help increase your DPS, or the Warp Stalker to help tank. Knowing what it takes ahead of time, will allow you to know not only where to farm for your pet, but how long it’ll take to help level and make it your best friend. After all, isn’t one of the greatest benefits of being a hunter having your loyal companion running along with you?
