PTR Change to Steady Shot – What does it really mean?

MassiveBlips: vote it up!

Well, we’ve had a day to recover, and now it’s time for cooler heads to prevail.  I’m not going to debate the merits of the changes nor if these changes are too much, but just help explain what you can expect from these changes.

Using a parse of another member’s guild (Mysclique) run from WoW Webstats (Mysclique’s WWS Report).

I’ll start looking at these changes and reporting on what they mean, then we’ll do a composite post seeing how ALL of the changes combined affect us.

Please note: I am not using the hunter’s spec as a basis other than when we come to the change to pet damage. Each point will be based on an average of all hunters and their damage done in the raid and not a particular boss fight. I expect if you plug in your own numbers you should see similar results regardless of spec, with the exception of pet specific related changes.)

So let’s look at the biggest change reported:

1. Steady Shot (10% of attack power as damage, down from 20%)

This is probably the biggest change that everyone is concerned about.

See, right now Steady Shot is probably the most heavily used attack, it’s used for a good 30% of all our atttacks.  In the parse alone we see it averaging 34% of the total Hunter attacks.

Average Reported Damage was 1709.3

So let’s figure out how this now would be affected by the change.

Steady Shot Dmg = RAP * 0.2 + 252

(NOTE: we are not taking into effect buffs, glyphs, etc. but using an average RAP from the each Hunter’s Armory Profile, these numbers are to just to help give a base line)

Example RAP = 3620  (based on the avg of our example hunters)

Current Steady Shot Damage = 3620 * .2 + 252 = 976
Changed Steady Shot Damage = 3620 * .1 + 252 = 614
Total Steady Shot Dmg Reduction = 362

This is base Steady shot damage, not taking into effect Crit etc. So, Based on above what we can expact the Damage, Crit (Crit is defined as twice your normal damage) potential to be is:

Current Steady Shot = 976, 1952
Changed Steady Shot = 614, 1228
Total Steady Shot Dmg Loss = 362, 724

Now seeing that our hunters fired off an average of 155 shots with an average crit of 27.72% (113 Normal Damage, 42 Crits)

Our damage is now calculated as:

(Steady Shot Damage * # of Normal Shots) + (Steady Shot Crit Damage * # of Crit Shots) = Total Boss Damage

In this case:

Pre-Change Total Boss Dmg = (976 * 113) + (1952 * 42) = 192,272
Post-Change Total Boss Dmg = (614 * 113) + (1228 * 42) = 120,958
Total Boss Dmg = 71,314 or 34%

That means our hunter now has an average of 34%  Steady Shot Damage Reduction just from the change to Steady Shot.

So before we saw that Steady Shot contributed 34 % (1,395,958) of the Total Hunter Damage (4,105,758).

This would mean that now our hunter damage would be..
Total Steady Shot Damage Reduction 558,383 points less
Total Raid Damage Reduction: 3,547,375 or 14%

Now these numbers may vary on how much you use Steady Shot in your rotation. But I urge you to take these same formulas, and then go back and see how they affect your potential damage.

[Edit:]  Added total raid damage impact to help show that the total effect of the change.
