WTF!!! Brig Are You Nutzz!!!
Recently, I’ve had a couple of conversations that has had several people questioning either my sanity or at the very least the existance of a social life. Honestly, I don’t know what’s the big deal. I mean, it’s not like I go around punting Gnomes (oh yeah.. that’s acceptable, lol).
What’s this all about? Oh, yeah, guess it’s better to start at the beginning.
You see, I have this nasty habit of leveling up a Hunter and when I get bored deleting him. No.. I don’t mean at level 30, 50, 60, I mean level it to the max level, raid some, and at some point get bored and type those six fateful and permenant leters, D-E-L-E-T-E.
AH! Got your attention now? Ok so your now thinking I’m nuts also right? Well, let me explain and maybe you’ll get a better idea as to why.
I’ve been in the RPG world for over 2 1/2 decades (Yep that’s over 25 years). Waaay back, in the old D&D days when you had to actually roll your character and your stats were based upon how good you could through the 1d20 or 2d10. Back then the ability to get a rez was dependent upon your DM (Not GM, DM – Dungeon Master). If you were with a hardcore D&D DM if your toon died and the Cleric spelled failed you were dead and had to start over. Trust me, that was a tough grind to have to make up.
Well anyways, even back in those days I played a Hunter type character (in D&D it was the Ranger). And yes, I’ll admit it for all of you that my favorite name to use was Aragorn (well at least it wasn’t Legolas!!), my other favorite was Arafel. At least I’ve learned (well kinda I still have this crush on Arafel
).
Anyways, the point being that deleting your character or having to restart it after death started many years ago.
“But Brig, come on! You don’t have to do that now!!”
That’s true, I don’t. I could just keep a level 80 Brigwyn out there never use him except to farm or to seek reveng when corpse camped. But then if I did that the new hunter wouldn’t be Brigwyn but some other hunter. I guess I could take advantage of WoW’s Name Change feature. But either way, one of my new hunter’s wouldn’t be Brigwyn. Also, I’d always have the level 80 toon to rely on when things got tough. And now we get to my point.
I don’t want things to be easy. This is actually one of my biggest complaints about WoW right now. It’s become too easy. (At least it seems that way to me.) See, as we get better at this game we level faster, kill bosses quicker, gain more gold, etc… It’s just all gotten too easy. And when things get easy, it’s hard to improve. Anyways, I got off track.
I had said early on that I really wanted to become the best Hunter I could be. That doesn’t mean the most knowledgeable, or best theorycrafter, even the best geared. To me it means taking what you learned and applying it. What better way to apply lessons learned than to start over. I mean REALLY start over. No safety net. No level 80 to fall back on. No begging the GM for a “GM Rez”. But typing those six letters, D-E-L-E-T-E, and starting from scratch.
So I might be a bit nuts in your book. But I have found that I can play longer with crappy gear. Take on higher mobs than I really should be. Solo Elites and group quests before I used to be able to. Take on multiple mobs higher level than my pet and I. All of this has become possible by getting a much much better understanding of what it means to be a Hunter!
