If you remember last week we reported how there was a whole lot of hate going on with the new Ashen Verdict ammo. You either had to specialize in Goblin Engineering for Shattered Rounds or Gnomish Engineering for Iceblade Arrows.
Now I still don’t get why Gnomes get the arrows. Really, who’s ever heard of a Hunter gnomes! (Not that I wouldn’t roll one in a heartbeat. Seriously, take a look at what they looked like in T7.)
Anyways, I had reported that you would need to regain your Ashen Verdict reputation in between relearning the recipes. Well folks, that’s just wrong. Yep, I was wrong and happily to admit it! That serves me right for reporting off of posts and not digging around for myself. Mea culpa.
What I am happy to say is we’ve had too engineers pop over to our original post and offer up what’s really happening.
First Thetalisker said:
…[I]t would boil down to both changing specialisation and spending another Primordial Saronite to re-learn the appropriate plan.
Most guilds will put these in the guild bank so you can buy them for a fair amount of gold or in exchange of GearPoints, so it shouldn’t have to cost you 3K gold.
Finally – Icecrown Citadel drops mainly high-level bows, and not guns, so if you’re a goblin engineer now, you won’t have to worry about going back to gnomish for quite a while.
That was followed up by Evilbhlue confirming basically same thing.
i was goblin engineer and change to gnomish for the arrows since the bows r more common in ICC. when u change you do not lose anything u have learned you just simply can not make these items or use the items made already. if you spec back you regain the right to use any of them. you also do not lose any rep with ashen verdict, as i farmed half of it before changing and then finished to exalted and lost none. so u can learn both ammos and swap back and forth specs for 150g and not lose anything.
So there you have it folks. Seems like all the hoopla over the whole ammo thing was just that. A bunch of hoopla. Guilds are banding together to make sure they got the Pimordial Saronite and extra plans, or at least making sure they have one of each side in their guild.
And if you want a TLDR version, here ya go.
My initial understanding about losing Ashen Verdict reputation and either the shattered rounds plan when learning iceblade arrows was incorrect. You only loose the ability to make the old ammo when you switch. So to switch back you need only need the Primordial Saronite. It could be expensive, but guilds seem to be working it out to make sure you’re able to remain in peak DPS form.
So there you have it folks. I think we can officially call this another one of those hunter crisis that wasn’t. Thanks again Thetalisker and Evilbhlue for the tips!

Wow, that’s fantastic news! My guild already has a gnomish engineer, but in case someone decides to make bullets — it’s relatively painless.
I remain unhappy. While I sort of understand the split, the problem is that really, only one of them is useful.
My character has been a Goblin engineer since the first days of Vanilla. It’s part of who she is, and part of her history. I’m not changing that just so I can make arrows instead of bullets.
But what cheeses me off about it is that they forced that split, then only really put bows in. Where’s the high-end guns? This is another two dungeons where my options have only been bows on a character who prefers guns. And now I can’t even make my own ammo because of it? Lame.
They are ‘only’ 10g a stack on my server, so I just buy them, but I have decided I am ultimately against the split because they are just too unbalanced. It more or less is forcing people into one ‘better’ spec, which I thought Blizzard was now against. Especially as the Goblin/Gnomish difference is mostly a cosmetic choice for flavor.
It’s interesting you point out how there’s only Bows in the current endgame content. That leads us to wonder a couple of things. Will guns be coming out as the gates open or will they continue to only have bows in this expansion.
If history teaches us anything with Blizz (and it rarely does, but meh you get the point.) each expansion seems to feature one key weapon. A lot of people were upset at the amount of guns WoTLK has had as BiS for hunters and now the switch is happening with bows.
Some might think this is a conspiracy. Me? I keep wondering what the poor Draenei are going to do w/o ever seeing Crossbows drop!
Back to point though. I see this as an experiment were Blizz can claim victory even though we’ll grumble all the way to the AH.
Except it’s not “a bunch of hoopla”, it still precludes me from using my Goblin devices and making my own ammo.
At least it’s not as functionally retarded as I was worried it was, however.
But all the outcry is hoopla about nothing really. You don’t have to make you’re own ammo. You’re choosing to. So it’s a player’s choice that is having to be made. Yes, it bites for this minority, but you really don’t have to be Gnomish. If you prefer your Goblin devices then buy the arrows.
Either way, I will concede that I just really don’t get it really. To me I’d rather just spend 500-1,000 gold on the arrows for raids and not worry about it, but then again. That’s me.
Yes, buy the arrows that are being significantly price-gouged (or they were until I all but crashed the market), forcing me to pay a significant amount more to do competitive DPS.
That’s fair and fucking balanced. *end sarcasm*
The new ammo is also just going for around 10g on my server only 2g more than the previous ammo. Which is great for me because I recieve a nice boost to my dps, although it does feel a little like daylight robbery.
ROFL! Daylight robbery!? Nah, to me it’s more like I’m shopping at Target instead of Wally World
For something our class is balanced around? It’s absolutely daylight robbery.
