Trapping Guide and Tips

Trapping is the only real form of CC that hunters have. Mastering this is key, as it will increase your use in 5-mans and raids.

For trying out the tips below, I suggest Nagrand. There’s 2 reasons for this. First, there are a lot of passive beasts there. This way you can focus on trapping without aggroing a lot of other stuff. Second, as a 70, none of the non-elites should be any kind of problem for you if something goes wrong.

EXERCISE 1: TRAPPING A SINGLE TARGET

1) Pick the target you want to trap, and set it as your focus.

2) Lay your trap. Wait for a few seconds. (You should always try to lay your traps early enough that the CD is up before your mob is trapped, but sometimes you won’t be able to do that.)

3) Pull the mob with your distracting shot macro. (You can also do a cast sequence to include concussive to help you out with the time issue. Replace /cast [target=focus] Distracting Shot with /castsequence [target=focus] Distracting Shot, Concussive Shot)

4) Make sure you back up and untarget before it gets trapped to make sure that an auto-attack doesn’t break your trap. (Or target some other mob, or your pet. The Auto-Shot that will usually clip out after Distracting won’t be a problem in 5-mans/raids because you’ll be targeting the main mob. But while soloing, target something else.)

5) Move away and lay another traps several yards away, and keep the trap between you and the mob.

Continue doing this for a while, and try doing it while attacking other mobs as well. Try to keep the mob trapped for several minutes.

EXERCISE 2: TRAPPING 2 MOBS

For a 41/20/0 hunter, this is tricky, but not impossible, though there is a limit on how long we can keep this up because the duration of our traps is shorter than the cooldown.

1) You will want 1 to be your focus, and the other you’ll just have to be careful about breaking. (You can copy your distracting/concussive and take out the [target=focus]. You can also add another line afterwards /stopattack to help keep you from autoing your trap.)

2) Lay your first trap and wait for the CD to be all the way up.

3) Grab your first target (doesn’t matter if it’s your focus or not.)

4) As soon as it’s trap, lay your second trap and pull the 2nd target.

5) When both are trapped, back WAY up and lay another. You’re gonna need concussive here a LOT.

See how many cycles you can keep both controlled.

EXERCISE 3: TRAPPING CASTERS

This is tricky because casters are ranged, and that makes it harder to get them to run over the trap. There are a few ways to deal with this.

1) LOS (Line of Sight) Pull.

This works if you have a corner that you can run around. Place the trap at the corner, hit the mob, then run around the corner. The mob will run over the trap on it’s way to get LOS on you.

2) Distance Pull

This requires some room to work with. Lay the trap before the pull as close as you can without aggroing them. Once the trap is laid, move to your max range. At the pull, hit the mob, then back up as fast as you can. They might get a shot or two off on you, but not more than that before they run over the trap to get you in range.

3) Meat Shield Misdirect Pull

This is a variation of the Distance pull. Get your pet to “stay” at a point way back from the mobs. Lay the trap fairly close to the mob, and at the pull, Misdirect it onto your pet.

4) The “Oh #*%%” Plan

This is when nothing else is going to work. Run up to the mob, lay the trap. Simple, works, but not ideal.

Kiting can be a difficult thing to master.

There are a few key things that you need to do to be able to do this effectively.

1) Lay a Frost trap as early as you can before the pull. If you can already be off the CD when the first one is triggered, you’ll be in good shape.

2) Keep Concussive Shot ready to go.

Here’s how it works:

1) Lay your Frost Trap as close as you can to the mob without aggroing.

2) Get back to your max range.

3) When the pull comes, hit your mob with Concussive Shot.

4) Turn around and run, laying a second Frost Trap as you run.

5) When Concussive is up, hit it again.

6) Just rinse and repeat these steps.

Also have wing clip up if the mob catches up to you.

Aspect of the Cheetah can be useful, but the daze effect if it catches up to you can be a problem.

The elites (Bach’lor, Banthar, Tusker) in Nagrand give good kiting opportunities. If you need practice, try getting them all the way to Telaar. The lack of aggressive mobs in Nagrand makes this easier than anywhere else.
